Derek is an inspiring and empowering leader with a firm belief in the ability of people to deliver exceptional performance, given appropriate direction and support. He has worked with numerous SME and corporate businesses. He is an Olympic coach with a deep understanding of the key psychological factors in producing excellent performance on a consistent and ongoing basis.
His key achievements include a high performance turnaround project for Oxford University Boat Club.
He has been Technical Consultant and coach at the club since September 1999, working with athletes and the full-time coaching and management team. Derek operates via one-to-one coaching as well as group workshops and seminars to identify opportunities for improvement and address mental obstacles to success. Since Derek's involvement began, Oxford has won seven of the ten annual Boat Races against Cambridge, reversing a seven year losing streak.
He is a confidential mentor and sounding-board to coaches and athletes and advisor to the management team. He has devised and organised experiential learning events - including cross-country skiing and horse whispering - to enhance learning, promote development of communication skills and improve team dynamics.
Formerly he was Olympic Coach to the Swiss Rowing Federation being a key coach of the Swiss Olympic Team which won a record five gold medals at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic games, including two in rowing - Switzerland's first Olympic rowing titles since 1928.
